WNBA All-Stars Breanna Stewart and Napheesa Collier are set to revolutionize women’s basketball with the launch of Unrivaled Basketball, an innovative league aiming to fill the WNBA offseason with high-octane competition. Slated to debut in January 2025 and lasting eight weeks, Unrivaled will feature 30 elite players across six teams, engaging fans with intense 3-on-3 and 1-on-1 matchups.
Unrivaled isn’t just another league; it’s a statement. The league arrives as a response to the WNBA’s prioritization clause, which mandates players report to their teams by May 1 or face suspension. Many WNBA stars have historically played overseas during the offseason for higher pay, often risking injuries and other challenges. Unrivaled offers a domestic alternative, promising competitive salaries and a safer environment for players to continue honing their skills without the need to go abroad.
“Compensation is a huge part of Unrivaled as a league and a business. All the players in this first year will have equity in the league. For players to have a piece of the pie essentially to grow their generational wealth is something we’re really excited about.” said Collier.
Unrivaled’s first season will see games played in Miami, with the league’s roster expected to include WNBA All-Stars and veterans. The initiative has already garnered significant interest and support from the basketball community. Notably, Brittney Griner has expressed her commitment to staying stateside, emphasizing the league’s potential to provide a compelling alternative to overseas play.
Beyond the games, Unrivaled aims to redefine fan interaction with cutting-edge technology and immersive experiences. There will also be a one-of-its-kind 1v1 single elimination tournament played in February.
